Auto Insurance questions?

Kalen1212 asked:

I just bought a new car and moved out of my mothers house. I have been on her auto insurance as well since I was going to school while I was living there, after graduating, I finally found my own place. Since I bought the new car, I was wondering if it was illegal for me to stay on her insurance since I no longer reside there. She co-signed for me on the car loan, so she is actually on the registration along with me. I just don’t want to be doing anything illegally. I just bought the car this past weekend and moved the weekend before and I think I have a grace period to switch to my own policy if needed. Its just that the rate is sooo much cheaper on hers. I’m 28 with great a great driving record. Any thoughts?

  1. Really there should be a new policy written with you and your mom both as named insureds since the vehicle is in both of your names.

Your registration and insurance address should match for the vehicle along with your drivers license to reflect your new address where you live.

Your mom should be indicated on the policy since she has financial interest in the vehicle having insurance.

Each state has different time lines to work with when you are changing your address, so it would be my recommendation to do a search for your states dmv or dot transportation to figure out the time line that an address should be changed.

    Hope this helps 🙂
