Teens wreck a lot of cars. Lots of cars get stolen in big cities. Both of those cause higher rates.

Not only does the stats say you are likely to damage the car, where you live may also have a lot to do with it. You may live in a town where the car has a high likely hood of being stolen or vandalized. Especially an older car that is easy to steal. Pick the cheapest insurance company and give them a call. Ask questions about how to bring premiums down and what cars may be better for you.
Now you can see why so many drive without insurance. In central LA, 98 % drive without insurance.
