  1. Normally a credit card will only over the deductible you're charged when making a claim with your own car insurance. If you have an older car without collision or comprehensive then you have no coverage for damage to a rental car. Most cards also only cover up to a 'full size' rental car, aka a midsize sedan like an Altima or Camry. If you have an AMEX card, look at their premium car rental protection. It's $25 for up to $100,000 in vehicle damage for up to a 42 day rental. It acts as primary insurance for damage to the vehicle. If something happens just file the claim with them, they'll pay for the damage, and any loss of use charges will be waived. I used it when someone ran a red light and smashed into a rental car I picked up with 31 miles on it. AMEX paid for the nearly $6k in damage and went after the other person's insurance so I didn't have to.

  2. Dont some states require rental companies to cover minium liablity? Wher can I find a list of the amount from each state? Scenario: I don't have car insurance, don't own a car and am renting, paying with my credit card. What insurance do I need to buy. Can I assume that my credit card will cover collision and that state laws will cover liablity at time of renting?

  3. 1) A credit card often cover Collision LDW. 2) Like many people who live in big cities, if one does not own a car, then one does not have liability insurance. 3) The laws vary by state on what liability insurance coverage is provide on rental cars. 3a) For instance Hertz lists California as no coverage. 3b) Hertz lists NY and several other states as including minimum required liability. 3c) Then confusingly they state: "If renting in any other state in the U.S.A.: Hertz will provide secondary liability protection from claims of injury by others against you resulting from an accident with the rental car. Your personal/business insurance is primary to the minimum state limits. In the event there is no applicable liability protection, Hertz, by default, becomes primary."

  4. Nice video Dan! Any comments on the Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver provided by the credit card companies? How good does it work? Can it substitute the comprehensive and collision coverage?
