How much auto insurance coverage do I really need?

I am 21 years old and and married. I drive a 1 year old volkswagen rabbit, have had one speeding ticket and 1 major accident where I totaled my car(I was deemed at fault although it was BS, she hit me). I am renewing my policy and thought I had way to much coverage but I was reading this and apparently I need even more. http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/cars/new-cars/buying-advice/a-guide-to-car-insurance-405/ I do not own a house, the largest asset is our cars which are not that much.

Currently I have:
100,000/300,000 bodily injury
50,000 property damage
100,000/300,000 stacked uninsured motorist
500 deductible for comprehensive/collision
30 rental reimbursement- that is the cheapest they have and since I am under 25 I want to keep that on
I was told the accident was my fault because I was making a left hand turn so it automatically becomes my fault. I should have have plenty of time to make the turn but the woman who hit me came out from behind another car and was hauling, she totaled my car in a side impact when the speed limit was 35. I had forgotten my cell phone that day so she was the one who called the police and I could not call anyone for advice on what I was supposed to do. It was my first accident and when the cop showed up I was hysterical crying just because I had been so shaken up. I never got to tell my side of the story because. She actually had told the officer she knew I was not injured even though I had banged up my knee and arm.

I did not go to traffic school for the speeding ticket because I was not going fast enough to get any points on my license. I was going 38 in a 25 woo hoo!

  1. If your car is financed , then you need full coverage. Keep what you have. if the car is paid for and is NOT financed , you only need liability.

  2. legally biker is right. But if the car is paid for, can you afford to buy a another if you wreck it again? Is it worth the gamble? If it is just keep liability insurance, if not you might want to have coverage with a high deductable. How much can you afford to lose?

  3. I too often see the results of not having enough car insurance. In some large accidents having too little coverage can lead to financial disaster. Since you do not own a home the 100/300 BI limits you have are OK but you certainly don’t want to lower them.

The 50K for property damage is too low. There are a number of vehicles out there that cost more than 50K. An accident only takes a second to happen and the last thing you want to worry about is causing 60K of damages and only having 50K of coverage.

It is very easy to think it won’t happen to you. It happens, I deal with people who didn’t have enough coverage. Buying the minimum required by your state is not enough but many people do it and then when they cause more damage they can be stuck paying any balance to an insurance company for years.

  4. You have great coverage and I wouldn’t change a thing.

Ask your claim rep how you can send in a reconsideration of fault of liability. That means the company will reconsider whose is at fault.

You might want to post the accident details to get opinions on whose fault the accident was. Sometimes it is clear cut and sometimes its not. But if you want you can post the details to get some points of view.

And, for the speeding ticket you should have gone to traffic school. That keeps point off your DMV record. Anyways, ask your company how to get them to reconsider fault of the accident. They usually ask you to send them a letter.

As for lowering your premium, just ask your insurance agent if there are any more discounts that they offer and how to get them. Ask about multi-car and multi-line discounts.

If you really think your insurance company is wrong at putting you at fault for the accident you can file a complaint with the insurance commissioner in your state. A link is below. Just click on your state.

  5. It seems to me she was trying to overtake you in proximity of a junction which would automatically make it her fault, unless she was part of the oncoming traffic, in that case you would cut her up and it’d be your fault.
However if there are more than one carriageway and you moved from the inside to the middle one into their path, it is your fault, yet if they where speeding it could be a 50-50.
Anyway, your insurers will pay even if you have bare liability only.

These people might help you it’s free to inquire.
