There was well over 70,000 accidents in the Tri-County area of Metro Detroit in 2020. I don't know how many of them were catastrophic but for there to be a $5 billion dollar surplus in 2021, it just doesn't make any sense when people were driving less. The funny part about this is- that same check for traffic crashes in Michigan oddly enough shows no statistics on the types of crashes in 2020. 2019 had 985 fatalities TOTAL and 73k+ injuries though. THERE SHOULD'VE BEEN FAR LESS IN 2020 AND 2021 BECAUSE NO ONE WAS REALLY DRIVING. Insurance has a surplus because it makes sense if you don't pay attention to it. A certain demographic was charged more because they were from that demographic. It's sickening that certain people will get refunds and have their insurance lowered just because there's certain people. Meanwhile there's people who have been paying high rates for 5-10 years and have had no collisions with anyone but their rates are still high because they are of a certain demographic.

Why is it that people in Michigan pay higher insurance premiums while insurance premiums in other states are much lower. I can't see where Michigan driver's are any worse than in other states. You people act like it's Whitmers fault that premiums are so high. Premiums have been way to high for decades no matter who is governor. Put the blame where it belongs and that's the insurance companies. They have been gouging driver's for years and now they are crying because the might have to give a little back.
As far as Whitmer doing this because elections are coming up don't you think a republican would do the same thing? I do.
Some people's comments on here talk about covid and nursing homes. Well if Trump would have been honest with the people in America and not lied and downplayed the Virus things wouldn't have got out of hand like they did.

If she thinks the majority of Michiganders are so simple minded as to forget her EO and how people's lives have been ruined, deaths in nursing homes, businesses loss, and the list goes on and on. . . . she must really be in Oz!! No deal she makes is for the GOOD of Michigan.

The news outlets fail to tell that this is pure blood money. Catastrophic crash survivors are dying and suffering great losses, but hand out money appropriated for their recovery as a "surplus".

I live in the upper peninsula and I still believe that they should not be doing this they should take a look into this more carefully before issuing checks it could really cause a trickling affect and end up causing Michigan residence to be paying more in premiums for there car insurance

Defenitely in re-election mode for sure! We have not forgotten about your deliberate undercounting of patients forced back into nursing homes and the number of deaths that resulted. The patient numbers were more than 40% higher, while deaths were more than 75% higher.
