  1. I was at the U.S. record breaking race where he ran 3.22s / 399mph.
Orange County International Raceway, in Tustin, Orange County, 1974.
That pass was awesome. The traps lit up before you could even focus the car. It wasn't even a blur.
"It was like it was there before it even launched." (promotional for chrome valve covers ?)
The jet cars were there too. Kinda anti-climate after the rocket. Lots of posturing, like a Soap Oprah.
The Lil' Red Wagon made a rare appearance as well.
The track closed shortly after that race, and never reopened. I loved that place. ?

  2. He needed bigger chutes and an air brake. They work great on airplanes. That’s crazy time he set. 0 traction issues. When you build your crazy Mini you will need a cage in it after you make your first sub 8 second pass. It won’t pass safety tech also I would do it anyway even if not required. Can’t wait to see that beast.

  3. Sam was a buddy I miss greatly, we lost track when I was drafted, then life happened, and we had just gotten back in touch when he was killed. 🙁 I wish I had been over there for that run! 🙁 R.I.P. Rocket Man

  4. What I don’t get, is why would you need big, fat drag racing slicks on the rear wheels when they aren’t being driven by anything? It’s a jet engine pushing the car. Wouldn’t it be better to run skinny, low resistant tires on the back like the ones on the front?

  5. Such Crap Editing… several short cut runs tacked together in a way that you dont see the end is hard on the mind and eyes. Next time pay a real editor to do the job.
